45 MPH High Speed Rail Requires Some 25 MPH Operation

Last week we wrote about the proposal for a 45 mile per hour high speed rail line from Iowa City to Chicago (http://www.newgeography.com/content/002275-high-speed-rail-subsidies-iowa-nothing-something). Now comes word that the Norfolk Southern is requiring Amtrak trains to slow to 25 miles per hour on part of the Detroit to Chicago route eventually scheduled to American high speed rail standards (70 mile per hour or less in a world of trains averaging double that (http://annarbor.com/business-review/freight-company-cuts-amtrak-trains-speed-to-as-slow-as-25-mph-sparking-delays/).
